Why Are We Here?  Values Reflection Activity

Edmundo Norte, Deans of IIS, facilitated this community building activity for Senate members to examine, reflect upon, and share the roots of individual core values. Other shared governance groups, IPBT and the deans, have engaged in the activity and found it helpful to build a framework for equity in decision making.

Edmundo introduced the North American Medicine Wheel, and the importance of maintaining balance in the 4 different aspects of human nature, Mental, Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual.

Mental is related to our thoughts, intellect, and judgment. Physical well-being means to move, rest, and nourish the body in healthy ways.

Emotional focuses on relationships, connections to each other with meaning and purpose.

Spiritual/cultural: Ongoing spiritual practices. Work of the ancestors that continues to matter in future generations. How we show up for each other.

Creation stories of our values; from early childhood, how we grew up, family dynamics; influences like books or mentors that shape the principles on how we view the world, shape our core values. These are elements that contribute and continue to contribute to our thoughts and decisions. Knowing each other’s stories shifts from the head (mental) to connections (emotional.)

The activity was to break up into triads in Zoom breakout rooms:
“Please take five minutes to tell the story of the creation of your values, particularly those that are related to social justice.  That is, starting with your early experiences through the present day, as our life experiences continue to inform and refine our values.”

Each person in the triad had five minutes to tell the creation story of their values around social justice: birth order, where they grew up geographically, dynamics/experiences in early childhood and all the things that shaped the way they understand the world and that gave meaning to their sense of justice and equity. By understanding what each other’s experiences they can understand what each other’s recommendations and decisions might be.

As all came back to the main group, Edmundo’s question to all was: “How was it for you to contribute to this activity?”

    Responses included:

Helpful to meet and a little more about the other faculty.

It was amazing how 3 people who grew up in 3 corners of the world are so similar in their experiences, values, and motivations.

So interesting to see how various upbringings have had such an impact on career/passions/values

Would be nice in the senate to take a little bit of time with this or other activities to get to know each other a bit. Senate can feel so alienating.

Regular, quick check-in's at either the beginning or end of the meetings.

Short group check in with different prompts at each meeting or every other meeting. Small group discussions to generate feedback from more members of the senate.

Support for building community; concern raised about the need to get more senate work done; suggested creation of additional subcommittees, task forces to conduct ongoing senate work; may provide additional space/time for relationship building.

People could be structurally isolated and separated. Mindfully build in structure to support ongoing connection. Get to know each other as individuals; understand where the other is coming from, especially when there is disagreement on issues.

Support, sustain, and honor human connection. Strive to express ourselves authentically and honestly in a manner that honors the full humanity of the other person. Strive to learn to listen in a way that is not just listening to the arguments but listen to the heart of the other person.

Public Comment on items not on agenda (Senate cannot discuss or take action)

    • Hyon Chu announced the formation of the ICC (Interclub Council) Program Evaluation Task Force. They will come back next Monday with more details.
    • Bob Stockwell: In the Calbright board hearing last week, Chancellor Judy Miner committed district support for Calbright. This is disturbing and problematic. FA has been advocating against Calbright. They felt strongly that the $140-160 million dedicated to Calbright is a waste of money. Calbright was partly defunded. FA has conveyed their concern to the chancellor. https://www.calbright.org/ https://edsource.org/2020/california-legislature-pushes-to-close-embattled-calbright-college/633143
